Annie Mae Edwards, age 88, was born December 25, 1929 in Tuskegee, Alabama to the late Monroe and Pinkie Tolbert. She was the 4th child born to this union of ten children. Annie Mae was affectionately known as Wookie. Later, she married Cary Torbert Sr. in 1948 and relocated to East Chicago. To this union 2 children were born, Shirley Jean and Cary Jr. Annie Mae excepted Christ in 1959 and was baptized at the Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. T. H. Rankin. She continued to serve as a member under Rev. J.C. Wade Jr and current pastor Charles L Thompson her health failed her in 2012. In 1974, Annie Mae married John L. Edwards who simply adored her. They were true Cubs fans and enjoyed the games. They remained happily married until his death in December of 1997.
Annie Mae loved to cook and bake. She was very well known for her cakes, pies and peach cobbler. She was employed by St. Margaret Hospital for over 35 years as a Dietary Aide. She loved her coworker and remained connected with them until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her parents Monroe and Pinkie Tolbert; husband John L. Edwards; five sisters, Daisey Tolbert, Climmite Richardson, Anne Foster, Mary Forest and Willie Lee Torbert; one brother John Henry Tolbert and special friend Isadore Moore.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Shirley J. Miller of East Chicago, IN.; son Cary (Linda) Torbert of Pahrump, NV.; brother Nathaniel (Bernice) Tolbert of Tuskegee, AL.; sisters Roberta (Fletcher) Torbert of Phoenix City, AL., Lucille Henderson of Cleveland, OH., and Clara Foster of Tuskegee, AL.; grandchilden Michelle (Ivan) Wilcox of East Chicago, IN., Darte' (Cherina) Torbert of Merrillville, IN., and Jerrick Torbert Atlanta, GA.; great-grandchildren Cameron Cousins of East Chicago, IN., Keyaira Torbert of Merrillville, IN.
and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
