Charlie Johnson, Jr. was born in Star Route, Braxton, Mississippi to his parents Charlie Johnson, Sr. and Mary C. Johnson-Byrd on September 11, 1936. He was the 3rd of 8 children born to this union. Charlie accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Braxton, MS and attended New Hymn High School in Pinole, MS. Born J.C. at birth, he changed his name in 1975 to Charlie Johnson, Jr. He had various jobs in his lifetime. He worked for Forn Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan. Later, he worked for Consumer Metal Company also in Detroit, MI and his most recent job was a crossing guard for the Board of Education in Hammond, IN. He united with New Hope Baptist Church in Hammond, IN under the leadership of Rev. Herman Polk where he served diligently in the male chorus and as a bus driver. He united in holy matrimony to Nora Washington and to this union 5 children were born. Charlie loved his music; in his early years he liked to deejay, he loved to fish, working on automobiles, and playing card games with family and friends. Charlie Johnson, Jr. passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018 at home. He was 82.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Charlie Johnson and Mary C. Johnson-Byrd; stepfather Willie Daniel Byrd; sister Elnora Smith and daughter Maryland Johnson. He is survived by his children Charles (Katherine) Johnson of Brownstown, MI, Michael (Erica) Johnson of Taylor, MI, Andre (Priscilla) Johnson of Detroit, MI, Karen (John) Leatherberry of Hammond, IN; siblings Dorothy Fairley of Braxton, MI, Ann Halfacre of Layfayette, IN, Ruby (William) Shoulders of Drew, MI, David Byrd of Braxton, MI, and Mary Washington of Brandon, MS and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
