Della Johnson was born in Eutaw, Alabama to the late William and Alice Watkins on January 3, 1929. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. James Hunter where she faithfully served her church for many years. Della worked at St. Catherine Hospital as a certified nurse’s assistant. She was known as the “Pretty lady with the flower in her hair.” After retiring from the hospital, she took care of the elderly who were homebound. Della was very well known for her delicious cooking, i.e. specialty cakes and hog head cheese.
Della passed away Friday, June 29, 2018 at Franciscan Health in Dyer, IN. She was 89.
Della is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Johnson; daughter Anna Bertha Phillips; brothers William and Hezikah and three sisters Mary, Elmira and Alice.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories 2 children, Dorothy (William) Murrell of Merrillville, IN and John (Patricia) McMillian of Vandalia, OH; 6 grandchildren, Gwendolyn Upshaw, Ardella Aikens, Quentin Davis, Andrea Davis, Conan (Sandra) Davis and Danielle (Eric) Hronek; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; special son Paul (Petra) Bullock and a host of other family and friends.
