Lucy Wright Obituary/Virtual Registration

Lucy Mae Wright was born October 24, 1929 in East Chicago, Indiana to parents Eddie and Queen Wright. She was the youngest of four children. She attended East Chicago Public School. She welcomed 7 children, six daughters and one son. She always took pride in making sure her children had plenty to eat and were well dressed. Her home was so clean you could eat off the floor. Everyone who entered her house was trained to take off their shoes at the door.

“Mama Lucy” was a hard working mother. She would often dream of becoming a millionaire so that she would be able to help all of her family. That’s why she played her numbers…and the house and every spare sheet of paper were covered with her “numbers”. In reality though, she was already rich because she was surrounded by people who loved her and whom she loved. The riches she passed on were her words of wisdom.

Lucy Mae enjoyed many activities. In the past, she loved hosting Tonk card parties at her home. She had a beautiful voice and would sing along to many oldies including her favorite, “The Duke of Earl” by Gene Chandler. She also loved to dance and was very good at it, winning many dancing contests. Lucy Mae could cook and loved her sweets! She made delicious spaghetti and homemade tamales and her coconut cake and sweet potato pies were everyone’s favorite. She was always researching herbs and lived by the benefits of garlic. Later in her life, she enjoyed shopping at Walmart. She also loved exercising. She would walk the track on a regular basis and would even take a few of her great-grand-children along with her.

Our dear and beloved mama, ma, granny, grandma, Mama Lucy was a beautiful person inside and out. She will always be remembered for how her smile would light up a room, her funny one-liners, her phone calls, her generosity and most of all her dignity and strength until she fell asleep in death on April 19, 2018. We will truly miss her hugs and hearing her say, “I love you too”.
