Cora Lee Jones was born August 3rd 1940 to Mr. James Thomas and Ms. Dessie Ree White and grew up in the Harbor part of East Chicago, Indiana.  She was the youngest of two and the only daughter.  In her early childhood, she received Christ and joined the New Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church where she dedicated for the duration of her Life.

Cora attended East Chicago Public Schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1960.  In 1964, she received her Associates Degree of Nursing from St. Joseph College.  Soon after, Cora received her Bachelor’s of Science and Nursing (BSN) Degree at the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, IN  and later obtained her Bachelors of Science HealthCare Administration (BSHA) degree from St. Francis College of Joliet, IL. During her profession as a Register Nurse, she was employed at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond In. for many ages. After 40 years of her career, Cora retired as the Director for the East Chicago WIC Program at the Department of Public Health.  Over the years of her calling, she achieved many certificates, awards, and plaques of completion in Nursing, Medicine, Business and other Disciplines.  Cora was honored with recognition from several organizations including the Foundations of East Chicago,  Indiana Government, Commission on Aging, LEEOC, ECWIC, Operation Hope, NEMBC, Senior Companions and The Indiana Black Expo finishing with a noble highlight of receiving the Carol Mosby award in May of 1999.

In her early adulthood, Cora met and fell in love with John Willie Jones. They were later married on March 27th 1965. Born to this Union in 1969, was Cora’s pride and joy their son Sean D Jones.  Aside from her career, Sean was her life and greatest triumph.

Cora was known for her beautiful smile that could light any dark room, her genuine passion for Nursing, patient teaching and her desire to implement change for the greater good.  She owned a personality of being ambitious and determined with conviction. Cora was an extraordinary, strong, courageous, spirited woman and will forever be treasured in our hearts.

Cora departed this life on March 23rd, 2021 at the age of 80.  She is preceded in death by Paternal Grandparents: James Hampton and Cora Thomas, Maternal Grandparents: John and Maggie Williams, Parents: James Thomas and Dessie Ree Bell, Aunt: Arnetta Garret, Brother: James Hampton, and Nieces: Sherita, Sharmene, and Laverne Hampton.

Cora leaves to cherish in her memory- Devoted Son: Sean (Charmaine) Jones of East Chicago, IN., Nephew: Michael Hampton of Indianapolis, IN., Nieces: Kimberly (Dane) Dartez of Tempe, AZ., and Linda(William) Hobson of Merrillville, IN., Denise(Jerry) Lawson of Gary, In., Special Cousin: Kathy Toodle of East Chicago, IN,; special cousins Josie Williams and Doris Pollard; Appointed Sister and Best Friend: Eleanor Magee of East Chicago, IN. and a host of many cousins, family and friends.
