Dorothy Deloris Thompson was born February 17, 1940 to her parents Theodore and Winnie Johnson in Jefferson, Alabama. She was the fourth child of 11 children born to this union.
Affectionately known as “Dot,” she received Christ in Alabama at an early age. She joined New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, in Gary, IN, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. C. E. Ward. She was the first member to join under his leadership. She worked diligently as an usher, and cook at the church. Dorothy attended the Methodist Nursing Program where she received her nursing license. She worked relentlessly as a homemaker, nurturing and caring for her husband, children and extended family.
She met the love of her life, Charles Lee Thompson, Sr., in Mobile, Alabama and on January 13, 1963, they married and to their union are three children were born Otis L. Thompson, Cheryl D. Thompson, and Charles Lee Thompson, Jr. Later, she joined Metropolitan Baptist Church in Gary, IN, and served as an usher under the leadership of her son, Rev. Dr. Charles L. Thompson, Jr. She later joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church in East Chicago, IN, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Charles L. Thompson, Jr.
Dorothy enjoyed shopping, cooking, spending precious moments with family and Mrs. Mary Moore. Her special saying was, “I Ain’t Gone Say a Word!” She will be remembered for having a radiant smile, kind heart, and endearing laugh.
Dorothy Deloris Thompson passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021. She was 81.
She is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Winnie Johnson; daughter Cheryl D. Thompson; siblings Thomas Lee Johnson, Joe Nathan Johnson, Cleophus Johnson, and Earnest Johnson.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories her children Rev. Otis L. (Patrice) Thompson of Gary, IN, and Rev. Dr. Charles L. (LaShonta) Thompson, Jr. of Gary, IN; grandchildren Donta M. (Lakiyah) Thompson and Keshia Thompson both of Houston, TX, and Charles L. Thompson, III, Cameron Thompson, Sean Thompson, and Dallas Thompson, all of Gary, IN; great-grandchildren Donta L. Thompson, and Aniya Thompson, both of Houston, TX, and Skyler Thompson of Gary, IN; siblings Randy Johnson, John C. Johnson, Jeraldine Johnson, and Theodore (Carol) Johnson all of Chicago, IL, Maddie Wade and Joe Chaney, both of Demopolis, Alabama, Margaret Stewart of San Bernardino, California and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
