Helena E. Johnson (Smith), age 76 who was affectionally known as “RED” departed this earth on Wednesday October 27th, 2021, with her daughters by her side. Helena, “RED” was born in Chicago, IL but was a native resident of East Chicago, IN. She graduated from East Chicago Washington in 1964, was married to Delton E. Johnson, Jr. and they had two daughters. Helena was married to Delton for 41 years before his death. She retired from Inland Steel after 35 years of service.
Helena was an active member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Merrillville, IN where she was a member of the Pastors’ Care Ministry, she led the Food Pantry, and a Mother of the Church. Helena never met a stranger. She loved everyone she met and would always light up the room she walked in and had a strong love for her girls, Detra and Debra.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Delton E. Johnson, Jr, parents, and several siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory are her two girls, Detra N Hunt (Donald), and Debra Johnson, two granddaughters, Amenah C. Holt, and Ariel Hunt, her sister Sheila Collier, a host of nieces and nephews, and several close family friends.
