Deacon Lewis Moore was born on October 3, 1930, in Pickens, Mississippi. He was the third of four brothers born to the late Enzie and Katie Moore.

He moved from the South to East Chicago, Indiana in 1955 and met the love of his life, Eleanor Katrina Mahone. Lewis was married to Eleanor on June 4, 1960, and lived together, forever in love, for 62 wonderful years. God blessed this blissful union with three darling girls: La Gina Renee, Lorna Collette and Lythia Darcel.

Lewis was educated in the Pickens Public School System. As a young boy, his grandfather taught him and his brothers how to appreciate their land with farming and gardening skills which became a favorite hobby and pastime for Lewis and most importantly a way to “Give Back and Share” with his family and friends. In the 1950’s, he proudly served his country by joining the Armed Forces.

Lewis received his spiritual training, accepted, Christ and was saved in 1997 at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, in East Chicago, Indiana, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. David Blakely. Afterwards a strong spiritual bond of friendship and support grew between Lewis, Elder David Blakely, and Mo Delores Blakely. He faithfully served on the Deacons Board, Member of the Men’s Choir, Committed Student in the Sunday School, Youth Teacher in YOMODEW, lent his hands and gave of his heart and time to do whatever was needed inside the church and outside to further the work of the ministry.

For many, many years he was the church doorkeeper. He became a loyal and devoted power ~filled prayer warrior and interceded for many with his faithful Prayer Partner and Spiritual Sister Mother Dorothy Hill. Lewis started early hours calling his brothers, family and friends, praying with them and telling them about the goodness of Jesus. His prayer life and love for the Word of God was evident with his faith ~filled walk with the Lord; at the start of his Christian Journey until his last days with his desire to come to church “PRAISING THE LORD” with his brothers and sisters in Christ. Some of Deacon Lewis famous words of wisdom to the church was to “Stay on the Wall “and “That I just can’t tell it all, God has been so good to me!”

Lewis was a former employee of Inland Steel, retiring with 42 years of excellent service. Known around the Mill as a Mentor to Young Men, receiving numerous awards for Never Missing Days of Work, Always being on Time for the Job and a reputation for teaching others how to keep their cool under challenging situations.

Lewis was a Devoted Husband to his wife, he affectionally called “Elna.” He Loved his wife’s good home cooking and being loved by her tender care. He was nominated “Best Dad Ever” by his girls and showered them daily with his love and affection towards them. He was a Sports Lover with bowling and baseball as his favorites. He was known for his sharp sense of style, always presenting himself as a gentleman in his attire and demeanor. He loved dressing up in a good suit, tie, and his hats.

Lewis was a Special Father to many in his church, neighborhood, and community. Always concerned about his Neighbors well-being and the betterment of the East Chicago Community, especially his Special neighbors Ventura and Blanca Delgado, Jose Garza, and Drake Morris.

Deacon Moore was a Man highly favored by the Lord. Greatly Respected and Cherished. His Love for his wife, family and friends ran deep yet they adored him the most.

Saturday, March 12, 2022, 10:44 pm, Our Deacon Lewis Moore flew away quietly, went from labor to reward to his heavenly home at Saint Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana. He was 91 years old.

He leaves to cherish and celebrate his memory 5 generations.

His precious wife of 62 years, Mother Eleanor Moore, His 3 loyal daughters LaGina Ragland of Michigan City, IN, Lorna ( Keenan) Davidson of Schererville, IN, Lythia ( Everett) Payne of Gary, IN, Special daughters, Kimberly Williams Franklin, Atlanta Ga, Ericka McIntosh, Indianapolis, IN, two brothers, Lee Earl Moore of Jackson, Mississippi and Excell Moore of East Chicago, IN, 3 special sisters, Deborah Sanders, Jeraldine Kelly and Mary ( Ernest) Hagler all of East Chicago, IN, 1 special brother, Clarence Leon Perdue of California, one Sister in law Charlene Mahone of Gary, IN, 8 Grandchildren, Dionne Jones, Lawerence Jones, Lewis Jones, Everett Payne II, Keenan Davidson Jr., Shealisha Davidson, Adrienna Davidson and Arrienna Davidson, 22 Great Grandchildren and 11 Great, Great Grandchildren and a host of Special Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, other relatives, church family and friends. Spiritual Sons and Daughters, Lonnie (Debra) Hogan, Clarence (Alfreda) Phillips ,William( Becky) Lofton, James ( Roslyn) Wilson, Trent( Michelle) Goins, David Bell. Best Friend, Melvin Elkins of Gary, IN.

Devoted Friends Mother Surlana Martin, Arizona, Mother Jesse Payne, California.

He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Enzie and Katie Moore, his brother, Enzie Moore. 

Deacon Lewis Moore will be greatly missed and never forgotten in our minds and in our heart.
