Melva Garner

Melva Jean Garner was born May 15, 1950, to her parents Bessie Lee Garner and Cleother Garner in Canton, MS. She accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Hermon Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. K.B. Long.

Later, Melva graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago, IN with the class of 1969. Melva was a retiree of the Unilever Company. She was a hardworking, loving, and a caring mother who devoted her life to her family and friends and loved ones. Melva did not care who you were, she would open her door, her kitchen, and her home to help any way she could. She was a beautiful person. 

Melva J. Garner was called home on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at William J. Riley Hospice in Munster, IN. She is preceded in death by her parents Bessie Lee Garner and Cleother Garner and grandson Terrell LaTroy Woods, Jr. 

She leaves to cherish her memories her aunt Sarah Bennet; daughter Tamitha (Sherman) Walker of Hammond, IN; son Terrell Woods of Indianapolis, IN; brother Cleo (Althea) Gardner of East Chicago, IN; sister Corrine Kellybrew of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren Cletis Simmons, Elicia (Carl) Hurd of Wilson, NC; Rene Vasquez, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN; Tamelia Woods of Indianapolis IN; two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other friends and family.
