Mertice J. (Mosley) Cousins was born on March 15, 1936 in Woodland, MS to the late Chester and Nannie Mosley. The family moved to East Chicago, IN in 1941. She attended Field School and graduated from East Chicago Washington High School, Class of 1956. She worked as a Teaching Assistant for more than 17 years in the East Chicago Public Schools. Mertice was a long-time member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She married the love of her life, Lloyd Cousins, on May 14, 1960. They shared a beautiful marriage for 60 years. She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mertice was a mother figure to many over the years and was very fond of children and young people.
Mertice gained her wings and took flight to her heavenly home on September 26, 2020 at St. Catherine Hospital, with family by her side. She is preceded in death by her parents and several relatives and special friends. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted husband, Lloyd; three children – Brenda (Frederic) Hawes, of Fairborn, Ohio, Lloyd Cousins, Jr., of Merrillville, Indiana and Crystal Cousins, of Hammond, Indiana, who was her primary caretaker throughout her illness; and grandchildren Brittany Reeves and Brandon Reeves of Fairborn, Ohio and Jamal Cousins of East Chicago, Indiana.
