Robert Wright Obituary/Virtual Registration

Robert L. Wright was born on March 25, 1923, to his parents Charles Wright and Florence Whitehead in Clarksdale, MS. After the death of his mother, he was raised by his grandparents Robert Whitehead and Fannie Woods, a freed slave.

Robert, affectionately known as “Bob”, became a part of the Great Migration, a movement of Southern Black citizens that sought jobs and a better quality of life. He secured a job at Standard Oil Company in Whiting, IN and later sent for his first wife, Willie Mae Jones in 1942. From this union, their daughter Florence Adele was born.

Bob was drafted in 1942 to the U.S. Army during WWII. After receiving an honorable discharge, he furthered his education and became a graduate of Washington High School. Bob also completed Watkins Barber School and Wilson Jr. College as a certified tailor.

Bob went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a mailman for almost 40 years. Bob was a peaceful, caring, and loving man that never met a stranger. He was a compassionate man that was always there to lend a helping hand to others. Bob was well loved in the community especially to those he served on his mail routes. Bob was known for his infectious smile and signature cigar. He loved golfing, telling great stories and especially, spending time with his family. He was also a member, of good standing, with the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Shortly after retirement from the USPS, Bob’s wife, Willie Mae passed away. Years later, as Bob was enjoying retirement, he reunited with a coworker and friend, Diana. As this friendship flourished, an unbreakable bond and an unconditional love was developed between the two that led to marriage.

Bob always said that “Diana was keeping him young.” For almost 30 years, Bob and Diana shared a deep love for each other. They have been by each other’s side until the moment Bob took his last breath on August 10, 2023.

Robert has rejoined his loved ones and is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wright, and Florence Whitehead; grandparents Robert Whitehead and Fannie Woods; first wife, Willie Mae Wright; son Van Arthur Watson; brother Dr. Claude Montgomery and sister Charlene.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife, Diana Wright; daughter Florence Adele (Rocco) LaBroi of Gary, IN; granddaughter Jihan LaBroi of Gary, IN; bonus daughter Tanisha (DeWitt) Patton; bonus grandchildren Ariana and Jonathan Patton of Merrillville, IN; 3 other grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
