Sammie L. Starling was born may 8, 1942 to his parents Sammie and Lula Starling in Weir, Mississippi. Sammie moved to East Chicago, IN and received Christ at an early age. On April 12, 1961, he married the love of his life Sharon J. Wilson and two daughters were born from this union, Victoria and Nicole. Sammie was a high school graduate of Roosevelt High School and he attended college.
He later retired from Inland Steel after 30 years of faithful service as a Craneman . Later, he was employed at the East Chicago Urban Enterprise Academy where he loved to provide service and his maintenance work.
A loving, devoted and caring father and husband, Sammie better known as Spanky or Sam, had worked hard all of his life and always made sure that those around him were taken care of. He enjoyed life, he was a kind guy who enjoyed talking with people, had a sense of humor and was always going somewhere in his PT Cruiser taking care of something. Anyone that knew him, when greeted, his response was always “Slow and Easy.”
Sammie L. Starling passed away June 7, 2020 at his home in Riverdale, IL. He was 78.
Sammie was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon J. Starling; parents Sammie and Lula Starling; brother George Starling and sister Virlean Williams.
Sammie’s memories will always be cherished and remembered that of friendships, love, laughter, and kindness by all those who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Victoria (Dyrol) Washington and Nicole (Donald) Hall; four grandchildren Dyrol T. II, Dyriana T Washington, Dahnia, and Donald “BJ” Hall; one brother O.W. Starling and host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.
