Shirley Mae Brown was born April 11, 1944, to the parentage of Archie Lee Brown Sr. and Ida Mae (Clanton) Brown in East Chicago, Indiana. Shirley and her family grew up on Carey Street and later moving to New Addition. At a young age, Shirley confessed her faith and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1956 where she was baptized at Zion Baptist Church.
Later, she became a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. Shirley attended the East Chicago Public Schools System. As an adult, Shirley worked as a crossing guard for the East Chicago Public Schools System, a housekeeper for the Indiana Hotel in Hammond, Indiana and as an Environmental Specialist Assistant for St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana where she dedicated 36 years of service.
Shirley has always been known as a woman of faith, hope, and love; a woman of charity, kindness, and favor. A woman who loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a woman who was loved by every person she touched. She will always be remembered as a woman rich with God’s undeniable love.
On Thursday, May 5, 2022, Shirley transitioned to be with her “Sweet Jesus”. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Archie Lee and Ida Mae Brown, her maternal grandmother, Etta Lou Clanton, and her sister Linda Faye (Brown) Pelt. She leaves to cherish her two children, John Henry (Rae) Richmond Jr. of Merrillville, Indiana, and Ilynda Renee Richmond, of Macon, Ga. Seven grandchildren, Kasha, Kentrell, Kaitlyn, Israel, and Ilijah. Six great-grandchildren, Rhilee, Kentrell Jr., Kendall, Cameron Jr, True Leigh and Kannon. Three brothers, Donald, Ronald, and Archie Lee Brown Jr. A loving niece, Demetrius “Meechee” Morrow and three beloved cousins, Rev. Theresa Chandler, of Nashville, TN; Latoria (Cocoa) Jones of East Chicago, Indiana, and Shelly Clanton, of Texas, and a host of great-nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.
